A generational story about families and the special place they live in, sharing love, loss, laughter and life.. Based on the comics ‘Here’; by Richard McGuire. It was first published as a strip in the comic magazine “Raw”; in 1989 and was expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. Richard’s father, at one point early in the film, names several towns that he states are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when since actually these are all towns that are along Interstate 80 in PA, which hadn’t even been built at the time.. The film relies on one to enjoy the fixation of a single camera/location and tell a story about the impact of time on life and the people who move through it. Zemeckis accomplished this task on many levels and managed to use the space well and keep the shot dynamic despite being so static. Dynamic set changes help make this play fascinating, the idea of furniture changes being a feature of the house itself, which is impressive and serves as a metaphorical window into life. I loved seeing this room inhabited and the families that called each villa home, seeing their interactions, auras and personalities cast a different light on the scene and tell their own micro-stories. Transitions occurred through the contours of the shots, drawing attention before undulating into a new scene, the technique is smooth and rarely overdone for me. It had many creative facets but never lost its anchor of realism to make this a nice and balanced piece. In terms of story and acting, an A-list of talent helped bring this film to life and achieve its goal of being a slice of life. Here is a film that relies heavily on being relevant and the cast to make the relevance come alive. As for the story, it rarely bleeds of the people living the life, taking fragments from different periods and reflecting them in the times. The ups and downs are beautifully captured on screen, and Zemeckis' the vision helps drive the concepts home and hit you with that emotional punch this movie promised. When the relevant stories hit me, they further strengthened my connection to the film and I found my inner self reflecting on what this film was supposed to teach me. The acting is there to give words to the visions, with plenty of poetic dialogue without being too Shakespearean in delivery. Bettany was a surprise to watch, and while it’s not as engaging or dynamic as the Disney films, it still manages to impress me with a stellar performance of the Boomer generation dealing with the rapid changes taking place in the world. Wright’s return to the screen is fierce, her character torn between fun and frenzy, a brilliant portrayal of the struggles that befell many in her place during the great decades of change. Hanks is of course just as talented as he is, incorporating elements of his other characters into every moment of his life and doing so with the same class and vigor he almost always brings to the screen. It’s a chemistry that works, with this family atmosphere feeling so natural and almost genuine, with strong cues to guide the characters and never falling too far into Hollywood portrayals.
